Developing Post Moves for Big Men

Developing Post Moves for Big Men

Footwork. Feel. Finishing.

The modern game may be dominated by pace-and-space, but post play isn’t dead—it’s just evolved.

A skilled big can change the game with smart seals, strong finishes, and savvy footwork. Whether you’re coaching a traditional big or a versatile forward, teaching effective post moves still matters—and it starts with repetition, timing, and IQ.

Let’s break down how to develop dominant post players in today’s game.

Why Post Moves Still Matter

Even in a three-point heavy era, post players provide:

  • High-percentage scoring options in tight games
  • Foul pressure on defenses
  • Mismatch punishers when opponents switch
  • Inside-out opportunities to create open perimeter shots

Post players who can score with their back to the basket AND face up become matchup nightmares.

Phase 1: Build the Foundation – Footwork & Balance

Post play starts from the ground up. The best bigs aren’t always the strongest—they’re the most balanced.

Key Concepts:

  • Wide, low base for leverage
  • Catch on two feet – jump stops allow for pivots both ways
  • Seal and hold position with hips, not hands

Drills:

  • Mikan Drill Variations – regular, reverse, power finishes
  • Lane Line Footwork Series – pivot, up-and-under, jump hooks
  • Wall Touch Drill – teaches foot positioning and explosive base

🧠 Coach Tip: Teach young bigs to “play tall” (chin up, elbows strong) and “finish through contact” from day one.

Phase 2: Teach the Essentials – Go-To & Counter Moves

Every dominant big needs 1–2 go-to moves and at least one counter.

🏀 Go-To Moves:

  1. Drop Step – power move off a deep seal
  2. Jump Hook – versatile, hard to block
  3. Quick Spin – when defender overplays the top side
  4. Face-Up Drive – vs. slower defenders

🔄 Counter Moves:

  • Up-and-Under – when shot blockers jump
  • Shimmy Fade – when defender leans on the shoulder
  • Step-Through – when the middle is cut off

🎯 Drill These:

  • 1-on-1 live reps with limited dribbles
  • Pad finishes to simulate contact
  • Short shot clock situations to build urgency

Phase 3: Read the Defense – IQ Over Strength

Elite post players don’t just react—they read.

Teach your bigs:

  • When the double is coming
  • How to pass out of pressure
  • Where the help is rotating from
  • How to kick out to shooters on the weak side

📽️ Use film to show post entries, defensive coverages, and help rotations.
🎯 Work in 4v4 shell drills to teach post reads in live action.

Phase 4: Conditioning & Consistency

Post play is physical and repetitive—your bigs need to be in shape to battle.

🦵🏽 Add:

  • Footwork ladders for agility
  • Short burst sprints for rim-to-rim transition
  • Finish-through-contact reps at the end of practice when tired

📈 Progress tracking matters:

  • Chart post touches
  • Track field goal % in the paint
  • Measure growth in decision-making (passes vs. forced shots)

Bonus: Empowering Your Bigs Mentally

Being a post player in today’s game can feel thankless. Teach your bigs to:

  • Take pride in screening, sealing, and rebounding
  • Embrace physicality without fouling
  • Lead with their voice on defense

Praise their grit, not just their buckets. Let them know their role wins games.

Final Thoughts

Developing great post players takes time, attention, and belief. It’s not about teaching 15 different moves—it’s about mastering a few, reading the floor, and playing with confidence.

Remind your bigs:

“You don’t need to be flashy—just efficient, physical, and dependable.”

When they can control the block, they control the game.
