Every coach has a bag. Some of us carry way too much in it, and some of us show up to the first practice of the season with one dry erase marker that is already dying. After more than a decade on the sideline, from freshman assistant to head coach and now helping rebuild a program, I have learned that the right gear does not make you a great coach. It does take things off your plate so you can spend your energy on your players.
This guide is the list I would hand a first year coach. It covers the books that shape how you lead, the sideline essentials, practice equipment, player development tools, film gear, and the stuff you hope you never need but always should have.
You do not need all of it. Start with what solves a problem you have right now.

Books Every Coach Should Read
The best investment you can make in your program is in yourself. These are the books I recommend most to coaches who want to lead better, build culture, and get sharper on the X's and O's.
Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections by John Wooden
Short, readable chapters built around the Pyramid of Success. Easy to read a page before practice and walk in with a clear head.
InSideOut Coaching by Joe Ehrmann
Challenges you to ask why you coach. If you believe players come before results, this one will put words to it.
Legacy by James Kerr
Culture lessons from the All Blacks, including the idea that nobody is too big to sweep the locker room. Great for setting team standards.
The Culture Code by Daniel Coyle
Research on what makes groups trust each other and play for each other. Useful for building a staff as much as a team.
Chop Wood Carry Water by Joshua Medcalf
A quick parable about falling in love with the process. Works great as a team read in the preseason.
Positive Coaching by Jim Thompson
A practical framework for youth and high school coaches who want to hold high standards while building kids up.
The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon
Simple rules for keeping your staff and locker room positive, especially during a rough stretch of the season.
Training Camp by Jon Gordon
A fast read about the habits that separate the good from the great. Good for captains and leadership groups.
Eleven Rings by Phil Jackson
How Phil Jackson got star players to buy into a team first system. Full of ideas on managing personalities.
Leading with the Heart by Mike Krzyzewski
Coach K on trust, communication, and running a program like a family.
Mind Gym by Gary Mack
Mental skills like focus, confidence, and handling pressure, explained in a way you can teach your players.
Practical Modern Basketball by John Wooden
Wooden's full manual on offense, defense, drills, and practice planning. A classic for any coaching library.
Basketball: Multiple Offense and Defense by Dean Smith
Deep detail on the passing game, pressure defense, and how a Hall of Famer built his systems.
Sideline and Game Day Essentials
The stuff that should live in your bag all season long.
Fox 40 Classic Whistle with Breakaway Lanyard (3 Pack)
No pea inside, so it never sticks, and it cuts through a loud gym. The three pack covers the whole staff.
Elite Clipboards Basketball Dry Erase Clipboard
Draw it up in a timeout so your players can see it, not just hear it.
PowerNet Magnetic Coaching Clipboard
Magnets make it easy to show rotations and matchups, and the back has a lineup chart for game day.
Crown Sporting Goods Magnetic Basketball Tactic Board
A bigger roll up board for film sessions, chalk talks, and locker room walkthroughs.
ACCUSPLIT Pro Survivor Stopwatch
Big readable display for timing drills, conditioning, and keeping practice segments on schedule.
EXPO Low Odor Dry Erase Markers (8 Count)
Keep a pack in every bag. A dead marker in a timeout is a bad feeling.
Practice Equipment
Efficient practices come down to planning and having the right tools ready before your players walk in.
Champion Sports 30 Ball Rolling Cart
Gets every ball on the floor fast so you are not losing the first five minutes of practice.
Pro Disc Cones (Set of 50)
Mark spots, closeout lines, and stations. Cheap, durable, and easy to toss in a bag.
QuickPlay Adjustable Agility Ladder
Footwork and quickness work for warmups or a station rotation.
SportsRepublik Pinnies (12 Pack)
Split teams in seconds for scrimmages and shell drills.
Morpilot Electric Ball Pump
Fills a cart of flat balls in minutes instead of wearing out your arm with a hand pump.
Player Development and Training Aids
Tools that help players get better reps, whether in practice stations or on their own time.
Liberty Imports Dribble Goggles (12 Pack)
Forces players to keep their eyes up. The 12 pack lets the whole team run ballhandling stations at once.
TEKCAM Dribble Goggles (2 Pack)
Same idea in a smaller pack, good to recommend to players working out on their own.
SKLZ ShotLoc Shooting Trainer
Takes the guide hand out of the shot so players learn a clean one hand release.
NUNETH Basketball Return Attachment
Sends the ball back to the shooter so one player can get a lot more shots up in less time.
Franklin Sports Basketball Rebounder
A pass back for solo passing reps, or an extra station during practice.
Fit Simplify Resistance Loop Bands (Set of 5)
Defensive slides, hip activation, and injury prevention warmups. I want my players strong, and this is an easy place to start.
Film and Tech
Film does not lie. If you are not recording games and practices yet, this is the easiest way to start.
UBeesize 67 Inch Phone Tripod with Remote
An affordable way to get your phone up high enough to film a full possession.
XbotGo AI Sports Gimbal
Uses your phone and follows the action on its own, so you do not need someone working the camera.
XbotGo Falcon AI Camera and Tripod Combo
The upgrade pick. A standalone auto tracking camera with a tall tripod for full court film.
JBL Flip 7 Portable Bluetooth Speaker
Music for warmups, or crowd noise to get your team ready for a loud road gym.
Health and Safety
Not every gym has a trainer on site. Be ready anyway.
24/7 First Aid Coaches First Aid Kit
Built for coaches, with what you need for cuts, sprains, and ice at practice or on the road.
Mighty-X Athletic Tape with Pre Wrap (3 Pack)
For ankles and fingers when you are the only adult in the gym.
Gear Helps, Coaching Wins
None of this replaces a good plan and a staff that cares about its players. But the right tools save time, and time is what every coach is short on.
If you want help with the plan part, Underdog Hoops University has practice plans, play breakdowns, and program building resources for coaches at every level. You can try it free for 14 days.
