How to Develop High-Percentage Scorers

How to Develop High-Percentage Scorers

Every coach wants scorers — but not every scorer helps you win.

There’s a big difference between a volume scorer and a high-percentage scorer. The first takes a lot of shots. The second takes smart, efficient shots — and converts them at a clip that consistently puts pressure on the defense.

High-percentage scorers are the backbone of championship offenses. They know when to shoot, how to get to their spots, and how to impact the game without forcing the game.

Here’s how you can help your players become efficient, high-IQ offensive threats.

1. Teach Shot Selection With Purpose

Scoring is not just about making shots — it’s about taking the right ones.

High-percentage scorers:

  • Know their spots (mid-post, wing 3, floater lane, etc.)
  • Understand when to shoot off the catch vs. off the bounce
  • Avoid tough, contested shots early in the shot clock

As a coach, create a shared definition of a “great shot.” Watch film together. Pause during scrimmage to discuss decisions. Give your players a shot rating system (Great / Good / Forced / Bad) and coach them through it.

2. Drill Game-Like Finishes at Game Speed

It’s one thing to score in drills — another to do it with a defender on your hip and help side rotating.

High-percentage scorers thrive at the rim, so train them to:

  • Use both hands around the basket
  • Finish through contact
  • Use fakes, floaters, and high finishes off the glass

Repetition is key — but so is realism. Don’t just run layup lines. Simulate defenders, bumpers, and decision-making on the fly.

3. Build Scoring Off of Their Strengths

Not every player needs to shoot threes or post up.

Find what each player does well and develop counters around it:

  • If they’re great at driving right, add a Euro or spin back move
  • If they shoot well off the catch, teach them how to relocate and move without the ball
  • If they’re deadly in the midrange, show them how to separate into space efficiently

High-percentage scorers don’t try to be everything — they master what they do best.

4. Teach Players to Create Easy Points

Efficiency isn’t just about shooting — it’s about finding ways to score without a play being drawn up.

Focus on:

  • Cutting with purpose (backdoor, basket cuts, flashes)
  • Offensive rebounds and putbacks
  • Transition opportunities — sprinting the floor early
  • Drawing fouls and converting at the free throw line

Scorers who don’t rely solely on isolation or set plays are far more valuable — and tougher to defend.

5. Improve Decision-Making Under Pressure

Sometimes, the best shot is the one you don’t take.

Teach your players to:

  • Read help defenders
  • Pass out of doubles or traps
  • Know when to reset vs. force

Use small-sided games and “live decision” drills where players are forced to read and react under pressure. When players learn to make good decisions quickly, their shot quality improves — and so do their percentages.

6. Track Efficiency, Not Just Points

Help players understand that 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting is more valuable than 20 on 8-of-26.

Track:

  • Field goal percentage from different areas (paint, midrange, 3)
  • Free throw rate (FTA/FGA)
  • Turnovers vs. assists
  • Points per possession in isolation or pick-and-roll

When players see these numbers, they begin to understand how to be effective, not just active.

7. Instill Confidence Through Repetition

The best scorers don’t hesitate. Why? Because they’ve earned confidence through repetition.

Build daily routines where players:

  • Take game-speed shots from game spots
  • Track makes/misses
  • Visualize success before drills or reps

When players know they’ve put in the work, they trust their shot. And when they trust their shot, they stop pressing and start producing.

Final Thought

High-percentage scorers aren’t born — they’re built through discipline, reps, and the right mindset.

Teach your players to value shot quality. Help them master the reads, skills, and habits that lead to efficient offense. And most of all, remind them that scoring is not about getting buckets — it’s about getting the right buckets.

Because when your team is filled with smart, skilled, and efficient scorers — you don’t just play well. You win more.
